Why is the wood behind my gutters rotten?
The gutter has been overflowing or leaking into it, probably for years. Fascia is where an overflowing gutter dumps water first, and it is wood with no sun on it. It rots, the hangers lose their grip, the gutter sags, and the overflow gets worse. The fascia is replaced — with PVC or wrapped in aluminum so it does not happen again — and the gutter that caused it is fixed.
Do I need to replace fascia before new gutters?
If it is soft anywhere, yes. New gutters hung on rotten fascia pull loose within a season, because the hangers screw into wood that will not hold them. The fascia is checked when the old gutters come down, and replacing a few boards then is far cheaper than rehanging gutters later.
