Gutter guards are sold as eliminating cleaning and they do not. What a good one does is change an annual clean-out into an occasional brush-off, which is worth a lot on a two-storey house.
What each type does here
Fine stainless micro-mesh performs best under Middle Tennessee hardwoods, keeping out both leaves and the maple seeds and oak catkins that defeat coarser screens.
Reverse-curve surface-tension guards work well on leaves and poorly in the intense downpours we get, where water can overshoot. Foam and brush inserts trap debris inside the gutter and are generally a poor choice here.
The pollen and seed problem
Nashville’s spring drops an enormous quantity of fine material — maple samaras, oak catkins, pine needles, pollen. Coarse screens pass all of it straight through.
That fine debris is what actually clogs gutters here, more than autumn leaves, and it is the reason mesh aperture matters so much.
- Micro-mesh stainless: best under hardwoods, still needs brushing
- Reverse curve: good on leaves, can overshoot in heavy rain
- Foam inserts: trap debris inside, avoid
- Brush inserts: catch everything, hard to clean
- Any guard: still check downspouts and valleys
What guards do not fix
They do not increase capacity, so a gutter that overflows because it is undersized still will. They do not stop debris accumulating on top, which under a heavy canopy can build into a mat.
They also do not clear downspouts, which are where blockages actually cause overflow.
Installation matters more than product
A guard installed under the shingles can void a roof warranty and lift the first course. A good installer fastens to the gutter rather than the roof.
And the gutter should be cleaned, resealed and correctly pitched before guards go on, since getting back in afterwards is harder.
