Gutters are sized by the volume of water a roof delivers in the heaviest rain the area actually gets, and Middle Tennessee gets intense short bursts rather than gentle drizzle. A gutter that handles a normal spring shower can be comprehensively overwhelmed by a summer thunderstorm, and the standard five-inch installation is often the reason.
What decides how much water arrives
Three things. The area of roof draining into that run, the pitch of the roof, and the rainfall intensity of the location. Steeper roofs deliver water faster, because rain hits at an angle and runs off quicker, which effectively increases the drainage area the gutter has to handle.
Middle Tennessee gets high-intensity rainfall, and the design figure that matters is not annual rainfall but how much falls in a short burst. A roof that would be comfortably served by five-inch gutter in a mild climate can need six-inch here on the same footprint.
Downspouts matter as much as gutter width
A gutter is a channel, not a reservoir. It only holds water on its way to a downspout, so the number, size and placement of downspouts decide capacity as much as the trough does. A long run with a single downspout at one end will overflow at the far end regardless of how wide the gutter is.
Going from a two by three inch downspout to a three by four increases the cross section substantially, and it also dramatically reduces clogging, because the debris that jams the smaller size passes through. On a house with recurring overflow, adding a downspout is usually cheaper and more effective than replacing the gutters.

Where overflow does damage
Water coming over the front edge lands in a line at the foundation, which in Middle Tennessee expansive clay is exactly what you are trying to avoid. Repeated saturation and drying at the perimeter is a principal driver of foundation movement here.
Water going over the back edge is worse and less visible. It runs behind the gutter onto the fascia and into the soffit, and it rots the roof edge from underneath. A house with a stained soffit or a soft fascia board usually has a gutter that is either undersized, sagging or blocked at that point.
When bigger is not the answer
Overflow with clean gutters in ordinary rain is usually a pitch or a hanger problem rather than a capacity one, and no amount of extra width fixes a gutter that is running backwards. Overflow only in extreme storms on a large steep roof is a capacity question worth spending on.
Valleys are the third case. Where two roof planes meet, an enormous volume arrives at one point, and it can shoot straight over any gutter regardless of size. That is solved with a splash guard at the valley and a downspout nearby rather than by upsizing the entire house.
